An AI quadcopter has beaten human champions at drone racing

Today researchers in Switzerland unveiled a small drone powered by artificial intelligence that can outfly some of the best human competitors in the world. A quadcopter drone equipped with an AI brain beat its human rival in 15 out of 25 races. The drone was trained using reinforcement learning and conventional programming strategies. While the drone’s success is impressive, it is limited to the specific course it has been trained on and lacks flexibility in handling external disturbances. Nonetheless, the drone demonstrates the potential of AI in real-world competitions.
